Posted on November 19, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — FirstLight Federal Credit Union is helping an El Paso student continue his education and learn the skilled trade of welding.

Jaime Herrera was given the inaugural Sun City Welding Academy Scholarship, valued at $5,000, during a ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

The scholarship is sponsored by FirstLight Federal Credit Union and will help Herrera continue his education at the Sun City Welding Academy.

“This scholarship is part of a broader effort to provide local individuals with the opportunity to receive high-quality training in one of the region’s most in-demand fields. Herrera’s award will directly apply to his tuition and fees for the Combo Welder 480 course at the Academy,” according to a news release that was sent out.

Herrera is also an U.S. Army veteran.

“We are incredibly excited to support Jaime Herrera and all of our students who are committed to building careers in the trades,” said Scott Herndon, director of Sun City Welding Academy. “This scholarship exemplifies our dedication to empowering the next generation of skilled workers, and we’re proud to partner with FirstLight Federal Credit Union in making Jaime’s educational goals more achievable.”

Herrera’s scholarship was awarded based on “his commitment to learning the craft and his potential to make a significant impact in the welding industry. The scholarship reflects the shared belief of both organizations in fostering educational opportunities that lead to fulfilling careers,” the news release said.
