KTSM News – Art museum launches program for people with disabilities

Posted on November 4, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) announced its launch of EPMA Arcoiris, a free art school program for children and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Classes will begin on Sunday, Nov. 17, and will be held monthly to allow students to “express themselves through a variety of artistic mediums,” the City of El Paso said in a news release.

The program, sponsored by AT&T, is available and free for students ages 5 to 18 years old to get creative in an art gallery and studio setting.

According to the City, the classes will be held by professional teaching artists and each session invites the students to engage with both the museum’s exhibitions and hands-on activities “in a supportive, inspiring environment that celebrates their unique abilities.”

Students will be able to showcase their artwork in a dedicated exhibition space, according to the City.

The EPMA Art School is a one-of-a-kind art education program in the region that will offer year-round classes for both children and adults, according to the City.

EPMA Arcoiris is the first pilot program of the EPMA’s new P.A.I.N.T.E.R. (Promoting Art Inclusion Nurturing Talent Education Resilience) initiative that reaffirms the museum’s commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment for individuals of all abilities to experience art, according to the City.

Registrations are now open and spaces are limited. Families can secure a spot by calling (915) 212-3056 or by emailing epmaeducation@elpasotexas.gov.

EPMA does highlight the accessibilities provided at their facility, such as wheelchair accessibility, welcoming of service animals and low sensory hours.
