EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A bear, who is not afraid of humans, has been harassing visitors to part of New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness during a series of close encounters of the “bear kind.”
The Gila National Forest has received numerous reports of a “human-habituated” bear frequenting the Jordan Hot Springs area of the Gila Wilderness, officials with the national forest said.

“The bear has charged at hikers, harassed campers at a campsite, destroyed a tent, and entered the hot spring while visitors were soaking in it,” according to a news release.
Since the release was sent out earlier this week, there was another bear encounter in the Jordan Hot Springs area, according to the national forest’s Facebook page.
In the latest bear encounter, a bear followed a party of hikers, who threw rocks to help scare the animal away, officials with the Gila National Forest said.
New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is advising visitors to avoid the area until the department has had an opportunity to investigate and respond appropriately.
