EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — As Thanksgiving Day fast approaches, KTSM is taking you behind the scenes for an exclusive look at what it takes to create the incredible floats that bring the Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade to life each year.
Our latest spotlight is on a whimsical float called “Fair Ventures,” sponsored by El Paso Electric Company.
Joe Daubach, Special Events Director for the Sun Bowl Association, says this float captures the spirit of this year’s parade theme perfectly.

“The theme is childhood is where dreams are born,” he explained. “And when you’re a kid, you always dream to get back to the fair, go to the state fair, enjoy all the food, the rides and all the fun that it entails.”
The float will feature a working carousel and swing, but what makes it extra special is the carousel’s unique history.
Richard Glass, the lead designer, shared that the carousel animals were originally created for the El Paso Ballet back in 1991.

“I made them the 34 years ago,” said Richard Glass, the lead designer of the float, referring to the animals that adorn the carousel. “So we came up with this idea that they stood inside the animals, and they wore harnesses up under the bodices of their tutus, and then they went from the waist down. They wore black, which you could see.”

This time around, the carousel won’t feature dancers, but lightweight mannequins instead.
“We’re going to have mannequins because they’re much lighter in weight, and we’re actually going to motorized the thing and make it turn this time, you know, with electrical power,” said Galss.
