EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A bicyclist has died after he was struck by a vehicle last Thursday, Feb. 29 in Las Cruces, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.
The Police Department says at around 7 p.m., Roy Parra, 47, was riding a mountain bike and pulling a small bicycle trailer on the northside sidewalk of Lohman Avenue.
The Police Department says Parra was crossing I-25 when he was struck by a silver Ford mustang, driven by Emily Elizabeth Portillo, 27.
Parra was thrown from the bicycle over the Lohman overpass and onto a rock retaining wall located below, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.
Parra was transported to UMC with injuries that at the time were believed to be non-life-threatening. However, he died this past Saturday March 2.
Investigators learned that Portillo was traveling at a high rate of speed as she exited I-25 and attempted to turn west onto Lohman Avenue.
The Police Department says Portillo failed to negotiate the turn and crashed head-on into Parra.
The Police Department also says alcohol and speed were believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
Portillo was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center on initial charges of aggravated DWI and reckless driving. However, the Police Department says the initial charges will be amended after the death of Parra.
