KTSM News – Billboards in El Paso will remind people to vote

Posted on September 30, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A nonpartisan group will be putting up billboards in El Paso reminding people to vote.

The billboards are also designed to spell out exactly when Election Day is. The fall general election falls on Nov. 5 this cycle.

Starting on Oct. 7, El Paso residents will see new billboards that are designed to combat misinformation and voter suppression ahead of the Nov. 5 general election, the national voter mobilization group VoteAmerica said.

The billboards are designed to provide “accurate, essential information, right when they need it most,” the group said in an announcement. “Shockingly, the single best predictor of whether or not someone will vote on Election Day is if they know when Election Day is. Yet most voting materials omit or bury the date.”

Starting on Oct. 7, El Paso residents will see new billboards on the streets designed to combat misinformation and voter suppression ahead of the election, the group said.

VoteAmerica’s messages are simple: “There will be record high turnout this year; early voting in Texas starts October 21. The election is on November 5, 2024.”

The billboards are part of a $7 million, 10-state campaign spearheaded by VoteAmerica.

“These billboards are also a critical line of defense against misinformation. If VoteAmerica does not buy these lucrative election-year ad spaces, they could be weaponized as a voter suppression tactic,” the group said.

The billboards will be up from Oct. 7 through Election Day.
