Posted on July 13, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Here is reaction after a shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 14 left the suspected shooter and at least one attendee dead.

Trump was whisked off stage and a statement from the former president says he is “fine.”

Law enforcement officials in Pennsylvania are now saying the incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt on the former president’s life.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott from his personal X account

“They try to jail him. They try to kill him. It will not work. He is indomitiable.”

“Red, white and blue. LEGEND.”

“Any kind of political violence in America is absolutely unacceptable. I’m grateful to law enforcement and praying that no one – including the former president – was seriously injured.”

New Mexico Senate Republican Leader Greg Baca (R-Belen), Senate Republican Whip Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho), and Senate Republican Caucus Chair Mark Moores (R-Albuquerque) issued the following joint statement:

“We are deeply shocked and outraged to learn about the assassination attempt of President Trump. This senseless act of violence is an attack not only on our President, but on the very fabric of our democracy.

“This fraught moment in American history warrants solidarity. We must stand united against violence lest we degrade into a third world country.

“We must let the law enforcement agencies do their work to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of our nation. Now more than ever, it is crucial for us to uphold the principles of peace, justice, and the rule of law.”

U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas via X

“I pray President Trump has a speedy recovery.”

Michael Apodaca, chair of the El Paso County Democratic Party

“There is never room for violence in our political discourse. Our nation’s founding documents call for freedom of speech and free, fair, and safe elections. We are committed to upholding these principles, solving our political issues through the ballot box, not by bullets.

“As we continue to gather more information about this ongoing situation, our thoughts are with former President Trump and the affected families.”
