EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Just a week after work began at Garcia Elementary School, PROCEDEO and the Canutillo Independent School District will now start construction at Canutillo High School. The sweeping bond renovations total $16.4 million.
“This investment at Canutillo High School is about more than construction. It is about giving our students every opportunity to succeed in their last step before college and career readiness,” Interim Superintendent Dr. Jesica Arellano said. “From upgraded safety features to modern classrooms, these renovations will provide an environment that inspires learning, builds confidence, and prepares our Eagles for the future.”
The renovations are part of a larger $387 million bond that was voted on earlier this year. It is the largest per-capita school infrastructure program ever approved in El Paso County.
The project funds safety and security enhancements, heating and cooling upgrades, structural and aesthetic improvements, career and technical education classroom upgrades, and technology improvements throughout the district.
“So, it’s been a while. In particular, Canutillo High School was built in 2006. So, we typically want our buildings to last 50 years. So, we’re in it for the long haul; it’s a state-of-the-art facility,” Arellano said.
Work on Canutillo High School includes:
- Construction of a secure entry vestibule to monitor campus access
- A modernized public address system
- Installation of advanced security cameras
- Upgrades to door access controls and new fire alarms
- Roofing upgrades and metal roof canopies
- Replacement of geothermal and evaporative heating and cooling systems
- Upgrades to robotics and healthcare CTE (Career and Technical Education) classrooms
- Wireless connectivity upgrades
- Fine arts striping for band and exterior lighting for the plaza area
To celebrate, the groundbreaking ceremony will feature robots operated by members of the CHS Robotics team assisting with the ceremonial shovel ceremony.
The project is being managed on behalf of the district by PROCEDEO, a Grapevine, Texas-based construction program management company.
“Our team is ready, and they’ve been successful on all these projects, making sure we came in under budget on the majority of projects. So, six of the projects are under budget, so we’re ready to get started in construction, and we’re just excited to move forward,” Brian Johnson, president of PROCEDO, said.
Work at Canutillo High is expected to be completed in about 12 months.
