EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The U.S. Border Patrol agent’s vehicle involved in an incident that resulted in a rollover crash of a suspected smuggling vehicle that killed two people on Sunday in West El Paso was hit by rocks during the incident.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced in a statement on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
During the incident, which happened on Sunday evening, Oct. 12, near the intersection of Executive Center Boulevard and Paisano Drive, the agent’s vehicle windshield was struck by a rock. However, the agent was not injured, CBP said.
As KTSM previously reported, agents had initiated a pursuit when they observed multiple subjects running from the border wall and getting into a car, according to El Paso police.
The pursuit ended in the suspected smuggling vehicle rolling over and killing 30-year-old Axel Everado Iquic-Sequen of Guatemala and 22-year-old Manuel Mateo Lopez of Mexico. Five other occupants, including the driver, were taken to a local hospital, police added.
The El Paso police and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility continue reviewing the incident.
