KTSM News – City of El Paso confirms 5 additional measles cases; 13 in total

Posted on April 15, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The City of El Paso Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed on Tuesday, April 15, five additional measles cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 13.

El Paso confirms 3 new cases of measles

The City said the newly confirmed cases involve an unvaccinated man in his 20s, two unvaccinated children, a woman in her 50s with unknown vaccination status, and a man in his 60s with unknown vaccination status.

Health officials have initiated contact tracing to identify potential exposures and are coordinating with state partners to prevent further spread of the virus, the City said.

El Paso health authority recommends vaccines to fight measles

The City said that although approximately 98 percent of El Paso County residents are vaccinated against measles, public health officials remain concerned about unvaccinated pockets within the community. Unvaccinated individuals remain at the highest risk of infection.

“The measles vaccine (MMR) is highly effective, but not 100% foolproof. Two doses provide approximately 97% protection, meaning a small number of vaccinated individuals may still contract the virus — particularly during outbreaks or in cases of weakened immune response. However, vaccinated individuals who become infected are far less likely to experience serious complications or transmit the virus to others,” read the news release.

Anyone who visited the following locations on the dates and times noted should verify their immunization status and monitor for symptoms:
