EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Construction for drainage improvements to begin in Northeast El Paso, after homes were damaged by flood waters back in June, according to the news release by the City of El Paso.
The drainage improvement project in the Sun Valley subdivision, along Palomino Street and Laramie Circle, is scheduled to start the week of Sept. 1 and is estimated to cost $475,000.
Construction is projected to be complete within six months, provided the weather permits and no unforeseen events occur.
The project includes the installation of new concrete flumes on the north and south sides of Laramie Circle to allow stormwater to drain into the existing concrete channel, owned and maintained by El Paso Water, according to the City.
This comes after several residents in the area reported that flooding is a recurring issue, with one stating that this is the fourth time her home has flooded in four years.
When the flooding happened in June, several residents saw waters reach nearly knee-high and cars almost entirely submerged in the water. Flood victims told KTSM their cars didn’t start after they were damaged by flood waters.

The construction is being funded through a legal settlement, which resulted from a lawsuit filed by neighborhood homeowners against the subdivision’s developer and design engineer.
As KTSM previously reported, City officials said the bridge in the neighborhood was built by a private developer during Sun Valley’s construction.
“I’ve met with families from the impact neighborhood and heard directly how flooding has affected their homes and daily lives,” City Representative for District 4 Boyar Trejo said. “I’m grateful for the community’s patience and am encouraged that the City is moving forward quickly with this construction project that aims to resolve an ongoing neighborhood concern.”
Before the beginning of the construction, Trejo met with residents in a community meeting to provide project details, address concerns and answer questions.
