KTSM News – City of Socorro asks for public input on transit services

Posted on August 30, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Socorro is asking for residents’ input on transit services and improvements that can be made through an online interactive survey.

The City is conducting a Transit Development Plan (TDP) named “Socorro ¡Avanzando!” that is a part of the 2024 Comprehensive Plan, according to the City of Socorro in a news release.

The project will be “assessing current transit services, identifying transit needs and improvement options exploring related opportunities to improve pedestrian and bike connectivity, and better understanding riders’ origins and destinations inside and outside the City of Socorro,” the City of Socorro said.

“Socorro is growing and changing at a pace exceeding the state average,” Socorro City officials said in the news release. “As a result, it’s important for the City to better understand the unique challenges and opportunities it has when it comes to ensuring high-quality transit service.”

The City launched a website to help gather input from transit users, residents, businesses and visitors about their needs and expectations.

The website includes a survey and an interactive map where users can draw their ideal routes that will be shared with planners, according to the City. Both interactive feedbacks are open to the public and will close on Oct. 1.

“To understand what Socorro needs, we believe it’s important to listen to Socorro,” Socorro City officials said. “In addition to community meetings, in-person interviews, and pop-ups at community events, we’re making it easy to provide your feedback without ever leaving home.”

In addition to the website, the City will be implementing public meetings over the next few months to get all views from transit riders.

“Socorro is a welcoming community that celebrates diversity, preserves its rich culture and history, and fosters economic growth, environmental stewardship, and a high quality of life for residents and visitors alike. It stands as a symbol of unity and prosperity for future generations,” said officials said.

Transit services will play an important role in helping Socorro to promote economic growth, be more eco-friendly and provide a high quality of life for its residents and visitors, according to the City.
