KTSM News – City taking first steps toward El Paso Convention Center expansion

Posted on April 16, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The El Paso City Council is taking the first steps to expand and modernize the El Paso Convention Center, the City announced on Tuesday, April 15.

As part of this initial phase, the City said it has authorized the purchase of two key downtown properties — 301 Overland Avenue and 320 West San Antonio Avenue — at a combined cost of around $4.8 million.

The City said these sites are expected to provide the space needed for future upgrades to the convention campus, including expanded event space and modern amenities that align with industry standards.

“The acquisition marks a significant milestone in the City’s broader strategy to grow the Convention Center footprint and strengthen El Paso’s tourism economy,” read a news release by the City.

“This is a critical first step in preparing El Paso to host larger and more impactful events,” Mayor Renard Johnson said. “As other cities like Dallas and Austin invest in their convention infrastructure, El Paso must also rise to meet the expectations of 21st-century event planners. One in 11 jobs in Texas is now tied to tourism, and this initiative will help ensure that El Paso’s visitor-driven economic impact continues to grow alongside our peer communities.”

During the most recently completed fiscal year, the El Paso Convention Center hosted 188 days of activity, drawing more than 165,000 visitors, the City said.
