EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — City of El Paso officials are alerting the community about a potential email scam from individuals posing as staff from the City of El Paso’s Planning and Inspections Department.
This particular phishing scam involves a fraudulent email, referencing existing projects, requesting payment for a so-called “City Compensation Fee” and including misleading details as well as a falsified invoice, City officials said.
City officials want to remind residents of the following:
- The City of El Paso does not send payment requests via unofficial email domains (e.g., @usa.com). All official communications will come from @elpasotexas.gov.
- No payment should be made in response to unsolicited or suspicious emails. If you receive such a message, do not click on any links or open attachments.
The City urges that its customers follow these email safety best practices:
- Verify the sender’s email address before responding or taking action.
- Look for red flags such as urgent payment demands, grammatical errors, or unfamiliar sender domains.
- Report suspicious emails.
- Do not reply to or forward the suspicious message to others
