EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The El Paso County Commissioners Court will consider the early appointment of Christina Sanchez as county attorney during its regular meeting on Monday morning, June 10, the El Paso County Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
The County Attorney’s Office said Sanchez will be immediately sworn in to the position if the commissioners vote in favor of her appointment.
Sanchez, who’s currently an assistant county attorney, won the Democratic nomination for county attorney with nearly 70 percent of the votes during the March primary.
Although Sanchez will appear on the November ballot, she is running unopposed as there is not a Republican candidate for the position.
If the Commissioners Court votes in favor of Sanchez’s appointment, she will fulfill the unexpired term of Jo Anne Bernal which runs until Dec. 31. She will also serve her elected four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2025, according to the County Attorney’s Office.
As we previously reported, longtime El Paso County Attorney Bernal announced her early retirement and resigned her post as county attorney effective June 7.
“With extensive experience as an assistant county attorney, Sanchez brings a wealth of legal knowledge and a commitment to public service to the role,” read the press release.
“I am honored to be considered for this appointment,” Sanchez stated. “And look forward to continue serving the people of El Paso County.”
