EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, walked out of President Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday night, March 4, saying she couldn’t stand listening to his “lies.”
She issued the following statement:
“I just walked out of Trump’s Joint Address. I couldn’t listen to the incessant lies.
“Donald Trump’s actions have demonstrated nothing but contempt for our Constitution, our country and its people. He’s corrupting our government, selling it to billionaires, and making hard-working Americans pay for it.”
Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-New Mexico, also walked out of the president’s speech.
Stansbury said that the first days of the new Trump administration are “not normal.”
“And we refuse to normalize it,” she said in a statement sent to regional media.
Her statement read in part:
“Fifty years ago, Members of Congress held a walkout of the 1975 State of the Union in protest of the corruption of the Nixon Administration and the Watergate Scandal. Tonight, we walked out in protest of the unprecedented attack on our democratic institutions and in solidarity with the millions of Americans who will be impacted by this Administration and the policies of the GOP-led Congress.”
