EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Despite significant delays due to the bankruptcy of the original Pellicano Drive Widening Project contractor and ongoing litigation, the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority (CRRMA) is advancing an interim plan to complete additional portions of the project, El Paso County said Tuesday, Nov. 12 in a news release.
The project’s progress was announced by officials during the Oct. 28 session of the El Paso County Commissioners Court, according to the news release.
CRRMA’s Executive Director Raymond Telles outlined a strategy to use available project funds to extend work on the north side of Pellicano Drive from Aircoupe Way westward to Loop 375. This would complete the area most critical to local traffic flow and access, according to the County.
The project has been stalled for about two years now.
The County said currently, the segment from Loop 375 to Aircoupe Way is partially open, with traffic flowing in both directions on one side of the street.
CRRMA confirmed that 100 percent of design plans for this interim phase have been submitted to the surety for review. The surety is the company that issued a performance guarantee bond on behalf of the original contractor.
“The surety is currently seeking contractor bids and is expected to provide recommendations in roughly six weeks. Once the surety chooses the contractor, and a takeover agreement is in place, work will proceed on this key segment,” read the news release.
The County said a final court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 13, and will address the validity of the contractor’s default.
If upheld, the ruling would require the surety to resume project responsibilities, according to the County.
