EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Court documents are shedding light on the chaotic events leading up to a man being shot inside his car and next-door neighbors being attacked in their Northwest El Paso home Monday morning.
Raymundo Guerrero Jr., 44, is facing eight charges ranging from assault, deadly conduct, injury to the elderly, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to court records, Guerrero’s wife called 911 around 9:30 a.m. to report her husband was experiencing a mental crisis. She requested the assistance of EPPD’s Crisis Intervention Team at their home in the 7800 block of Enchanted Ridge. Guerrero’s wife allegedly told dispatchers he grabbed his gun from the kitchen table and began shooting it toward the backyard until he emptied the clip. She claimed he went to the bedroom and grabbed his high-power rifle before leaving the house.
At the time of the call, Guerrero’s wife had jumped a rock wall, which led to an arroyo to call 911.
Guerrero then began firing his gun at at least four homes along the street. At that time, 41-year-old Herman Aguirre was returning from picking up his mail at the community mailbox when Guerrero began firing into his 2017 Audi S3, striking him in the back and left hand. Aguirre attempted to drive away from Guerrero and was ultimately given first aid by another neighbor down the street after collapsing on their lawn.
Aguirre told investigators he did not know Guerrero.
Court documents say after Guerrero shot Aguirre, he fled to his next-door neighbor’s home, where the homeowners told investigators he was agitated and pushed his way inside. Once inside, he allegedly began undressing and punching walls inside the house. The male homeowner attempted to hold Guerrero down but was unsuccessful. Documents allege Guerrero began punching the male homeowner and pushed the female homeowner into a wall. Afterward, he allegedly began throwing potted plants and a statue of the Virgin Mary at the couple. During the altercation, Guerrero allegedly bit the male homeowner’s back.
Guerrero allegedly left the home naked, and the neighbors locked their door as Guerrero ran naked through the neighborhood before responding EPPD officers used less lethal force to subdue him.
After the attack, Guerrero’s wife allegedly told authorities that her husband suffered from Major Depressive Disorder and had an “episode” on Jan. 25, four days before Monday’s chaotic incident. At the time, she called 911, and paramedics transported him to the hospital. He waited at the hospital for about 30 minutes before leaving without being evaluated by medical personnel.
Guerrero is currently detained on bonds totaling $635,000.
