KTSM News – CRRUA begins flushing hydrants, will cause discolored water

Posted on March 18, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) announced on Monday, March 18 that it will be flushing fire hydrants in the Riverside, Rio Vista and Meadow Vista areas.

CRRUA says it will begin flushing fire hydrants at 1 p.m. on Monday to remove sediments from water lines which will temporarily result in discolored water.

CRRUA says the flushing stems from a “well pump malfunction earlier this month that caused water in the Tierra Madre water tank to drop to a low level, releasing sediments at the bottom of the tank into the distribution system. Periods of high water use triggers the release of sediments.”

The hydrant flushing is scheduled to end at around 5 p.m. Monday and although the water is safe to consume, the CRRUA recommends waiting for it to clear before drinking or washing laundry.

“The discoloration should disappear within 24 hours. If it does not, residents and businesses should flush all cold water faucets in the house for five minutes,” CRRUA said.

CRRUA provides water to both Santa Teresa and Sunland Park.
