KTSM News – CRRUA says it passed December arsenic tests

Posted on December 13, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Camino Real Utility Authority says it has passed its voluntary monthly arsenic tests for December, as verified by an independent laboratory.

CRRUA provides water and wastewater service to Sunland Park and Santa Teresa. The utility has been under fire for water quality issues and discolored water at times.

Test results released by Eurofins Environment Testing, a water testing lab certified by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), show that arsenic levels at three arsenic treatment facilities (ATF) operated by CRRUA are below the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) maximum contaminate level (MCL) of 10 parts per billion (ppb), the utility said.

CRRUA says it excludes the Border Entry ATF from its monthly voluntary testing due to its continued meeting of all NMED requirements.

CRRUA has passed 18 arsenic tests since Jan. 24, including three consecutive quarterly NMED tests and 15 voluntary tests verified by an independent, NMED-certified laboratory, the utility said.

CRRUA Executive Director Juan Crosby said three of four Arsenic Treatment Facilities (ATFs) recently  achieved NMED compliance based on the department’s Running Annual Average (RAA).

The RAA is determined by averaging the previous four quarterly samples.
