KTSM News – DEA event ‘takes back’ unwanted, unneeded medication

Posted on April 19, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Drug Enforcement Administration will partner with local law enforcement and other agencies across the country for its annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The event will take place locally from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26.

In El Paso and West Texas, there will be more than 10 drop-off locations for your unneeded medications that are old, unwanted or expired. There will be more than 40 locations across New Mexico that same day.

The event has helped Americans for more than a decade safely get rid of unneeded and unwanted medicine. Since its inception, 19.2 million pounds (9,600 tons) of medication have been removed from circulation, the DEA said.

Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
