Posted on November 5, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A UTEP basketball player was arrested and charged with DWI after he hit a median while driving and was found to be twice over the legal limit, according to court documents obtained by KTSM.

As KTSM previously reported, Ronald “Trey” Brete Horton III was arrested on Sunday, Nov. 3, on a DWI charge and released from the El Paso Jail on a $750 personal recognizance bond on Monday, Nov. 4.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, an officer was driving down the 700 block of Sunland Park Drive when he saw a stalled vehicle blocking the first lane of traffic heading east.

The officer saw a man, identified as Horton, standing next to the vehicle’s front left driver’s side, with the door wide open and the airbag deployed. The officer asked Horton what had happened, and Horton replied that he had hit a median with his tire, according to court documents.

Horton told the officer that he had just dropped off a friend at their house. When asked if he was ok, Horton replied he was ok and that “the median just hit me out of nowhere.”

According to court documents, the officer asked Horton how much alcohol he had that night, and Horton admitted to drinking three shots about an hour and a half ago before the incident. Additionally, Horton admitted to being the only person in the vehicle.

The officer saw Horton “swaying back to forth, smell of unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from his person, glossy red eyes.” The officer then asked Horton if he was willing to take the standard field sobriety tests, but Horton declined. He also denied any medical conditions.

Later, Horton agreed to provide a breath specimen, which revealed he was twice over the legal limit: 0.185 and 0.195.

UTEP Men’s Basketball program released the following statement on Horton’s arrest:

“UTEP men’s basketball is aware of the situation involving Trey Horton and is in the process of gathering more information. At this time, Trey is suspended from all UTEP men’s basketball activities until further notice.”

Horton was not present for UTEP’s 2025-2026 season opener on Monday night.
