EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office is alerting residents to a new scam that’s targeting individuals who are receiving a photo of a purported bench warrant demanding payment for an alleged legal violation.
The County Clerk’s Office says the photo suggests that immediate payment is required to prevent arrest. Additionally, some residents have reported receiving phone calls from individuals impersonating law enforcement officers, threatening to come to their homes to arrest them if payment is not made.
The photo also includes a false signature from Doña Ana County Clerk, Amanda López Askin, the County’s Clerk Office said.
“The scam typically involves a threatening message or call claiming that the recipient is wanted for failure to appear in court. It may demand payment to avoid arrest or other legal consequences, often urging urgency. The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s office does not issue warrants in this manner and advises residents to be cautious and contact the Sherriff’s Office if you receive these messages,” the County’s Clerk Office said.
