EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — One of El Paso’s largest parks just got a major upgrade.
City leaders held a ribbon-cutting on Thursday, June 12, for the second phase of the Eastside Sports Complex, which has now doubled in size.
Located along the 14000 block of Montwood Drive, the $12 million expansion adds more than 40 new acres to the park, bringing the total to over 80 acres.
The complex, first opened in 2020, was funded by the Quality of Life bonds in 2012. It was designed to serve the growing far East El Paso community.
Now, the park includes eight new competition-grade flat fields, enhanced lighting, expanded parking, fencing, ADA-compliant restrooms, and improved landscaping.
“With the addition of more flat fields to accommodate multiple sports like soccer, football, and lacrosse, we’re working toward meeting the needs of the sports community,” Rep. Iván Niño said. “For years, El Pasoans have struggled to host outdoor sports tournaments due to the lack of flat fields, and it’s exciting to now see this become a reality.”
Other new features include a hike and bike trail, an all-abilities playground, covered picnic areas, food truck space, and seating for up to 500 spectators.
City officials add that the upgraded complex is expected to attract regional and even national sporting events, contributing to the region’s growing economy.
“The economic impact for a facility like this is tremendous again. El Paso now has a sports facility where we can have soccer. We can have other events out here,” said El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson. “People will come from all over to visit El Paso to play on these fields and stay in our hotels. You had a restaurant shop at our local businesses. So, this is a huge home run for El Paso.”
