EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – In light of Thanksgiving, El Paso Animal Services encourages pet owners to take a few precautions to ensure their pets stay safe and happy as the holiday can pose hidden dangers for our furry companions.
El Paso Animal Services provided the following tips to ensure pet safety during the holiday festivities:
Update microchips and ID tags: Before the holiday chaos begins, check that your pet’s microchip information is up to date and ensure they’re wearing a collar with a visible ID tag. Also, remember to verify your pets’ microchip information at PetMicrochipLookup.org. With doors opening for guests, pets can easily slip out unnoticed. Proper identification helps ensure your pet can quickly return home if lost.
Avoid harmful foods: Thanksgiving meals often include ingredients that are toxic to pets, such as onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, and raisins. Foods like turkey bones can splinter and cause internal injuries, and fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis. Instead, offer pet-safe treats or share plain, cooked turkey in moderation. Visit ASPCA.org for a list of toxic food items and keep the poison hotline handy for emergencies: (888) 426-4435.
Mind your decorations: Festive décor like candles, floral arrangements, Christmas Trees, and hanging lights can attract curious pets. Keep these items out of reach to prevent accidental ingestion, burns, or entanglement. Secure loose wires and avoid using decorations that may resemble pet toys.
Create a quiet space: Big gatherings can be overwhelming for pets. Provide them with a quiet, comfortable space where they can retreat if the noise and activity become too much. Ensure they have access to water, their bed, and some toys.
Dispose of trash properly: The scent of leftover food can lure pets to dig into trash bags or bins. Keep garbage securely sealed to keep pets from ingesting harmful scraps, bones, or packaging.
