KTSM News – El Paso Animal Services: Tips to keep pets safe this Halloween

Posted on October 28, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Animal Services is reminding pet owners to take precautions to keep their pets safe during the Halloween holiday.

The City has provided a list of precautions to keep their pets safe. Those tips are the following:

  • Keep pets identified: Frequent doorbell rings and open doors can make it easy for pets to slip outside. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags and microchip information. (Pro tip: Write your phone number directly on your pet’s collar with a permanent marker as an added safety measure.)
  • Create a safe space: Loud noises, costumes, and unfamiliar visitors can be overwhelming for pets. Set up a quiet, secure room with their favorite toys and enrichment to prevent accidental escapes.
  • Keep candy away: Chocolate and candy, especially those containing xylitol, are toxic to pets, and candy wrappers can cause choking or intestinal blockages. Store all treats safely out of reach.
  • Choose comfortable costumes: If your pet doesn’t enjoy dressing up, don’t force them. Try a simple festive bandana instead. If your pet enjoys wearing costumes, make sure it fits properly, allows free movement, and doesn’t restrict breathing or vision.
  • Watch decorations and flames: Keep candles, lit pumpkins, and electrical cords away from curious pets. These can cause burns, electrical shocks, or even fires if knocked over or chewed.
  • Walk responsibly: Avoid bringing pets along for trick-or-treating. Instead, take them for a walk earlier in the day before the crowds and noises begin. Even well-trained pets can become startled by costumes and loud sounds, leading them to bolt.
  • Know your pet’s limits: If your pet becomes anxious during holidays or loud events, speak with your veterinarian about safe calming aids or stress-reducing products before Halloween night.

If your pet goes missing, you can visit the El Paso Animal Services Center at 5001 Fred Wilson Ave. as soon as possible to reclaim them. For additional resources or to file a lost or found pet report, click here.
