EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso artist Tino Ortega unveiled his newest mural in dedication to Borderland icon Saul Armendariz, better known by his luchador name “Cassandro El Exotico”.
The unveiling happened on Saturday afternoon, June 21, in Lincoln Park, at 4001 Duranzo Ave.

Ortega said back in 2018, Cassandro asked him to create a mural for the movie “Cassandro, The Exotico!” but, when Cassandro had a stroke, Ortega said it felt like it wasn’t meant to be.
“This mural in itself has been a couple of years in the making,” Ortega said. “These murals up here in Lincoln Park are very important because they’re about our local culture, the Chicano culture and not only that but of local legends as well.”
In addition to the mural, Danzar Azteca Omecoatl, a local group that performs traditional Aztec dances, was also in attendance and did dances. Ortega said Cassandro has been dancing with the group for over 20 years.
“His importance (Cassandro’s) to the park is very, very noted. I wanted to make sure his footprint was definitely made here and his image will be here for as long as time to come,” Ortega said.
