EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Inductees were welcomed to a local El Paso club for adults with disabilities, so that they can gain the leadership and confidence to serve the community and become contributing citizens.
Kiwanis of El Paso, in partnership with GiGi’s Playhouse El Paso, has inducted 13 new members to their newest group, the Aktion Club, on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the playhouse, located on the second level of the Shoppes at Solana.
According to the news release by GiGi’s Playhouse, Kiwanis of El Paso is a local center for individuals with Down syndrome, and its Aktion Club is the only service club for adults with disabilities. The club has more than 7,200 members in over 400 clubs worldwide.
The Club’s objective is to “develop initiative and leadership, provide experience in working together to serve the community and prepare its members as contributing citizens.”
“I think individually, it helps each young person to grow. In their abilities, what they can do, get beyond their comfort level, and get into leadership positions and community service to help others. I think it has a great impact on these young adults,” Don Townsend, governor of the Southwest District Kiwanis, said.
“The biggest thing that we want to do as we start this club is, develop self-esteem and self-confidence. When you develop those two things, then leadership comes more naturally,” Paul Lanier, club advisor from Kiwanis of El Paso, said.
