KTSM News – El Paso County adopts ‘no-new-revenue’ tax rate for upcoming fiscal year

Posted on August 26, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso County Commissioners Court voted unanimously on Monday, Aug. 27 to adopt a “no-new-revenue” tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year.

“At $0.426323, this rate is more than three-cents lower than the County’s current tax rate. This is the third time in the past four years the County has adopted a reduced tax rate,” the County said in a news release.

With the adoption of the “no-new revenue” tax rate, the County said it had to forego “several critical investments including operating capital from departments, capital improvement funding, economic impact fund, and personnel contingencies.”

“I think we have to recognize that sometimes difficult budget years are going to happen to every single (county commissioners) court,” said County Commissioner Iliana Holguin, who made the motion to adopt the no-new-revenue tax rate.

During the discussion of the tax rate, county commissioners said they were aware of the challanges facing residents in the community, including inflation and price increases.

“We are grateful to the County departments, including County administration and operations, and all our budget staff for their commitment to cutting critical expenses for FY25 to be able to adopt this no-new-revenue tax rate,” County Commissioner Sergio Coronado said.

The Commissioners Court is expected to adopt their FY25 budget on Monday, Sept. 16.
