EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Texas Senate Bill 1120, a new law enhancing protections for victims of family violence, took effect nearly two months ago and is already making a difference for victims and those who prosecute offenders.
Senate Bill 1120, sponsored by Senators Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and Joan Huffman, aims to strengthen the rights of victims in cases of family violence, sexual offenses, and stalking. The bill includes an amendment supported by the El Paso County Attorney’s Office, Speaker Pro Temp Joe Moody, and the Texas Council on Family Violence, which extends protective orders by two years if related legal cases are ongoing.
El Paso County Attorney Christina Sanchez joined KTSM 9 News primetime anchor Andy Morgan on Wednesday, Oct. 29, discussing what she’s referred to as a “landmark legislation.”
“This is a significant step forward for victim safety in Texas,” said Sanchez. “No victim should have to fear their protective order expiring while they are still dealing with a complex legal case. These changes offer crucial, extended protection, giving survivors more time and peace to rebuild their lives.”
The new law ensures that protective orders are extended if a related divorce or child custody case is still ongoing, lasting until two years after the final decision in those cases. Similarly, if the person facing the protective order is charged with a family violence crime, the order extends two years after the criminal case is fully resolved.
The legislation also broadens the legal definition of “family violence,” allowing more victims to receive legal support. Lawmakers hope these stronger victim rights will encourage more crime reporting and promote safer communities across Texas.
“This is proof that if you see a problem and know the solution, you can make real and important change in the legislature,” County Attorney Protective Order Unit Division Chief Aaron Setliff said.
With the implementation of Senate Bill 1120, victims of family violence in Texas are expected to receive enhanced protections and support, helping them navigate complex legal situations with greater security.
