KTSM News – El Paso Mayor speaks on wildfires in Ruidoso

Posted on June 20, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso’s Mayor Oscar Leeser released a statement on the recent wildfires in Ruidoso on Thursday, June 20.

His statement is the following:

“The bravery shown by the first responders in Ruidoso is admirable, and the strength and resilience of Ruidoso’s residents as they face this terrible tragedy demonstrates the strength and unity of their community. I have been moved by the swift action and generosity of El Pasoans who have quickly provided assistance in multiple ways, and by the way this whole region has mobilized to help our New Mexico neighbors. We ask our community to join in prayer for all those affected by this devastating disaster.”

The South Fork Fire is estimated at 16,335 acres with zero percent containment. The Salt Fire is estimated at 7,071 acres with 0 percent containment, the New Mexico Forestry Division said on Thursday.

Both of the fires are burning on Mescalero tribal land, US Forest Service land, and the area surrounding Ruidoso.

Two people have also died as a result of the fires, according to New Mexico State Police.
