EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Opera, which is about to embark on its 32nd season, has named a new artistic director — a person who is well familiar with the organization.
El Paso Opera announced on Monday, June 2 that Cherry Duke will take over as artistic director.
Duke has been involved with El Paso Opera in several capacities, mostly recently as director of resident artists. She will also star in the group’s upcoming “Bon Appétit!” show on June 14 at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing, 1 Ardovinos Dr. in Sunland Park
“We are thrilled to have her expand her involvement with our organization and provide integral artistic direction. Cherry replaces outgoing Artistic Director Justin Lucero, now Artistic Director of Theatre Latté Da in Minneapolis,” El Paso Opera said in its announcement.
Duke said: “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to step into the shoes of Justin Lucero, who has led our company with such love and care for eight seasons. With the rest of the staff of EPO, we will continue and enrich our commitment to community service and artistic excellence.”
El Paso Opera said Duke has had an extensive career. Here is what the organization said about her background:
“As an opera singer, award-winning educator, director, producer, actor, and ‘champion of diversity,’ Cherry has substantial experience in the numerous facets of performing arts. Rising to a leadership position is the culmination of this wide-ranging experience. Cherry will also continue in her current role as Professor of Practice and Director of Opera UTEP at The University of Texas at El Paso, continuing to strengthen the already established bond between El Paso Opera and UTEP.”
El Paso Opera Board President Jay Stratton: “Cherry’s appointment marks a bold new chapter for our company. Building on past seasons of incredible artistic excellence, she brings not only a deep passion for opera but dynamic energy, new connections, and a fresh spark of creativity. We can’t wait to see how her vision will inspire and elevate our work in the seasons to come”
