EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Police Department released body-camera footage from an officer-involved shooting earlier this month in the Upper Valley in which a suspect was killed and an officer was shot.
The new images were posted on the El Paso Police Department’s Facebook page on Monday evening, June 30. Detective Judy Oviedo, a spokesperson for the department, said the video was being released because transparency and accountability are crucial elements in being able to serve the community.
The incident happened at about 3:15 p.m. June 1 along the 6400 block of Passo Via in the Upper Valley.
Police were called out to a family violence incident in progress.
When officers approached the home, a man — later identified as Salvador Valdiviezo — approached the officers with a gun and began firing.
Both officers returned fire and the suspect was struck several times, police said at the time.
He was transported to a local hospital where he later died, police said at the time.
One officer was shot in her leg and was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Both officers involved in the incident are two-year members of the force.
In the video that was released, you can clearly hear officers tell the man to show his hands and to drop his weapon. Their commands were not obeyed by the suspect.
You can also hear and see gunfire being exchanged in the video.
The female officer who was shot can clearly be heard to utter a couple of swear words and tell her partner that she had been hit.
