EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The U.S. Postal Service facility in El Paso will be getting $9 million in improvements to modernize it and catch up with maintenance, according to an announcement sent out by the agency on Tuesday, March 19.
But part of the local post office’s operations will be transferred to Albuquerque, according to the Postal Service. No layoffs are planned, the organization said.
The improvements are part of a $40 billion plan to upgrade and improve postal processing, transportation and delivery across the country, according to USPS.
Under the improvement project, the El Paso facility will remain open and will be modernized into what is being called a “local processing center.” Part of the El Paso post office’s operations known as “outgoing operations” will be transferred to Albuquerque, however, according to the announcement.
“Currently, a majority of mail and packages are destined outside the El Paso area to the rest of the world,” according to the announcement.
“These investments will result in expanded and streamlined package processing and distribution capabilities in the local market and new workplace amenities for USPS employees such as new lighting, as well as renovated bathrooms and breakrooms,” according to the announcement.
Once the improvements and changes are made, the Postal Service says that delivery and other services will be improved in El Paso.
