KTSM News – El Paso, West Texas groups get $2.3M to help veterans

Posted on September 16, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Organizations and agencies that support veterans in El Paso and West Texas received $2.3 million in grants from the Texas Veterans Commission on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

This funding will provide essential services benefiting over 48,000 veterans and their families in the West Texas region, state Sen. Cesar Blanco, D-El Paso, said.

The grant recipients and their respective amounts are as follows:

  • Jeff Davis County:
    • $345,000 grant for veteran housing support
    • $350,000 grant for veteran services
  • El Paso County:
    • $285,000 grant for veteran treatment court program
    • $400,000 grant for veteran services
  • YWCA El Paso del Norte Region: $250,000 grant
  • Child Crisis Center of El Paso: $235,000 grant
  • Project Amistad: $200,000 grant
  • The Salvation Army – El Paso: $150,000 grant for homeless veteran support
  • City of El Paso: $120,000 grant for transportation programs and services

“West Texas is home to tens of thousands of veterans who have worn our nation’s uniform with honor,” Blanco said.

“These grants mean that more veterans and their families will have access to housing, counseling, transportation, and other critical support right here in our communities. From El Paso to the rural counties I represent, this funding will help ensure our veterans are not left behind when they come home, Blanco said.

“I’m grateful to the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance and to the local organizations on the ground doing this important work. Together, we are honoring the service of our veterans by making sure they and their families get the care and support they’ve earned,” Blanco added.

In May, TVC commissioners approved over 200 grants totaling over $46 million to 175 organizations across Texas. This is projected to provide direct services to nearly 40,000 veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses.

Since 2009, through the current 2025-2026 grant cycle, more than $359 million in grant funding has been awarded through more than 1,600 FVA grants, the commission said.
