KTSM News – El Paso woman’s kindness inspires ‘Food City’ to help families impacted by government shutdown

Posted on October 31, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and federal government employees can take advantage of an El Paso grocery store’s customer’s generous donation that was made amid the government shutdown.

Food City announced Friday, Oct. 31 that SNAP recipients and federal government employees could apply to receive a free Food City gift card that can be used for groceries.

The help comes after Nicole Roldan, a Food City customer, reached out to the store asking how she could help those impacted by the government shutdown.

“I love this community, I love this store, and I know what it’s like to need help,” Roldan said. “I wanted to donate to a local grocery store. El Pasoans are generous, and we take care of our own.”

Melissa Santos, Director of Finance and Marketing for Food City and a member of the third-generation family business, said the store is proud to help its neighbors during tough times.

“We are so grateful for Ms. Roldan’s generosity, and Food City will be donating $1,000 towards gift cards for those in need,” Santos said. “Community is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to supporting local families and helping one another through difficult moments.”

Families who rely on SNAP benefits or federal employees affected by the shutdown can apply for assistance at foodcityep.com. Approved applicants will be contacted directly to receive a free gift card.

To ensure the store can help as many people as possible, Food City asks that only one person per household apply.
