EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An El Paso man was killed late Thursday night, July 18 in Southern New Mexico in a head-on collision along Interstate 25 involving two commercial trucks, according to New Mexico State Police.
Both drivers were killed in the crash that happened just before 11 p.m. Thursday along Interstate 25 near Miler Marker 59 in Sierra County, State Police said. That is about 20 miles south of Truth or Consequences.
One of the drivers was identified as Adrian Alejandro Cruz, of El Paso, no age given. The other driver has not been identified.
The preliminary investigation indicates one commercial truck was traveling north on Interstate 25 when it struck an elk in the middle of the roadway, New Mexico State Police said.
The collision caused the northbound truck to swerve to the left, break through the median barrier and enter the southbound lanes. There, it collided with the truck driven by Cruz, State Police said.
The impact caused both trucks to catch fire and resulted in a “complete burn-through of both trucks,” State Police said.
New Mexico State Police continue to investigate the crash.
