El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — El Pasoans and West Texas residents will have a chance to share their feedback on a mid-decade redistricting effort that is happening during the Legislature’s special session that is going on right now.
The Texas Senate Redistricting Committee will host a virtual regional hearing at 8 a.m. MDT/9 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, July 29. The meeting will be held via Zoom.
State Sen. Cesar J. Blanco, D-El Paso, is urging West Texas residents to participate and be heard.
State legislators, at the behest of Gov. Greg Abbott, are considering redrawing congressional districts in Texas. Blanco said it is important for the public to participate.
“The Texas Legislature is taking up a rare mid-decade redistricting session, and this is your opportunity to be involved in the process of apportionment to ensure your voice and community are represented fairly in Congress. I encourage everyone to make your voices heard and register to testify for this virtual hearing,” Blanco said in a news release.
Blanco will be present at the committee hearing to listen to testimony directly from constituents.

State. Rep. Vince Perez, D-El Paso, said he will host two public community meetings on Saturday, Aug. 2 to provide updates and get public input on congressional redistricting efforts.
These meetings will be at 10 a.m. Aug 2 at the Valle Bajo Community Center and Library, 7380 Alameda Ave. and at 12:30 p.m. that same day at the Pat O’Rourke Recreation Center, 901 N. Virginia St.
“While no official maps or redistricting plans have been drawn or shared with the public at this time, these sessions will provide important context on how potential map changes could affect representation in Congress, particularly for Latino and minority communities across Texas,” Perez’s office said in a news release.
