EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — As we inch closer to the winter season, El Paso Animal Services is providing cold weather safety tips for pet owners.
Provide shelter and warmth
El Paso Animal Services is urging pet owners to bring in their pets indoors at nighttime. When your pets are outdoors, they must have access to drinkable water and have a proper shelter with four walls, a roof and facing away from any drafts.
If your pet is tethered, they must be able to access their shelter and water, adhering to the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act. Using chain restraints is prohibited.
Watch for signs of cold stress
Senior pets, puppies and pets with shorter coats are more vulnerable to the cold. Try to limit their outdoor time and consider having your pets wear sweaters and booties.
If you notice shivering, anxiety or lethargy, bring your pets indoors and warm them gradually.
Beware of antifreeze and chemical hazards
Antifreeze and de-icing chemicals are highly toxic to pets. Keep pets away from driveways, garages and areas where these chemicals may be present.
If you suspect your pet has consumed antifreeze, seek emergency treatment.
Tap your car hood
Community cats often seek warmth from the engine and may sleep under car hoods.
Lessen the risk of accidents by tapping on the top of your car hood or honking your horn before starting your car.
Frostbite and diet
Paws, ears and tails are prone to frostbite. After pets come indoors, check these areas for redness, swelling or sensitivity and use a towel to remove any moisture.
If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, increase your pet’s calorie intake and make sure they have access to unfrozen water.
Keep wildlife away
Cold weather may bring wildlife into neighborhoods in search of food. Remove pet food dishes after feeding to avoid attracting unwanted guests.
