KTSM News – EPCC athletes earn NJCAA academic honors

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — All six of El Paso Community College (EPCC) athletic teams achieved a team GPA above 3.0 for the 2024-25 academic year, earning NJCAA recognition for outstanding academic performance.

EPCC made the announcement on Wednesday, July 30, in a news release.

In addition, several student-athletes were named to NJCAA All-Academic Teams for their individual accomplishments in maintaining academic excellence while competing at the collegiate level, according to EPCC.

“We are very proud and delighted of all our NJCAA Academic All Americans,” Felix Hinojosa, director of athletics and head cross country coach at EPCC, said. “Our athletic department’s prime directive is to motivate and guide our student-athletes to develop the ability to continuously acquire new and better forms of knowledge that they can apply to their work and to their lives. Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in life.”

The student-athlete’s accomplishments are as follows, according to EPCC:

NJCAA All-Academic First Team (4.0 GPA)

  • Baseball: Gustafson Koehn, Isaac Rodriguez
  • Softball: Emma Martinez, Analuz Silva
  • Cross country & half marathon: Joaquin Moya, Jezarae Valenzuela

NJCAA All-Academic Second Team (3.80 – 3.99 GPA)

  • Softball: Michelle Diaz
  • Baseball: David Gamez, Barry Miller

NJCAA All-Academic Third Team (3.60 – 3.79 GPA)

  • Softball: Kimberly Chavez, Dulce Ontiveros, Alejandra Salazar
  • Baseball: Julian Enriquez, Paulo Martell, Ethan Muniz, Christopher Spencer, Tanay Vyas
  • Cross country & half marathon: Faith Kandie, Ayden Lugo

Team GPA highlights (2024–2025):

  • Baseball: 3.17
  • Softball: 3.39
  • Men’s Half Marathon: 3.24
  • Women’s Half Marathon: 3.61
  • Men’s Cross Country: 3.27
  • Women’s Cross Country: 3.60

“EPCC’s athletic program continues to excel both on the field and in the classroom, emphasizing personal growth, discipline, and academic achievement,” read the news release. “With strong academic outcomes and dedicated support from coaches and staff, EPCC student-athletes continue to represent the college with excellence and integrity.”
