KTSM News – EPCSO: Woman arrested in connection with thefts at gyms

Posted on June 3, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A woman has been arrested in connection with a string of thefts at a popular chain of gyms, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ruth Angelica Barraza, no age given, was arrested on May 24 on a warrant linking her to 10 different thefts at five Planet Fitness locations, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s deputies were initially called out on May 6 to a Planet Fitness located at 13681 Gateway West. There, they met with a woman who said that while she was working out at the gym, an unknown person had removed the combination lock from the locker she was using.

The victim then told deputies that several items from inside her purse had been stolen.

During the investigation, deputies learned that an unknown suspect had stolen credit cards from the victim’s purse and then made several unauthorized purchases at Ross.

Deputies used surveillance footage at the store and the check-in history at Planet Fitness to identify Barraza as the suspect. They said they eventually linked her to 10 thefts at five different Planet Fitness locations.
