KTSM News – EPISD super says she will not seek pay raise in ‘solidarity’ with teachers

Posted on September 17, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Independent School District Superintendent Diana Sayavedra said that she will not be seeking a pay increase as part of her evaluation this year.

Sayavedra, who has been leading EPISD since January 2022, made the announcement during the Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17, shortly before the board was going to go into closed session to discuss her performance evaluation.

Sayavedra said she would not seek a pay increase in “solidarity” with the district’s teachers who were not given pay raises under the district’s new budget.

“I would like to share with the board, in lieu of the fact we were not able to increase compensation for teachers, in solidarity with teachers and standing alongside them, I am not requesting any additional compensation for my contract,” she said.

Sayavedra said it was important to make that announcement publicly.

Sayavedra makes $320,000 a year under a contract that was extended by the board in January of this year.
