Posted on October 2, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – An 84-year-old man died a month later after a pedestrian crash that happened Sunday, Aug. 18 in East El Paso, the El Paso Police Department (EPPD) announced Wednesday, Oct. 2 in a news release.

At approximately 12:57 p.m. on Aug. 18. officers responded to investigate a pedestrian crash that occurred at the 12100 block of New World.

EPPD said the initial investigation revealed Manuel Pedraza, 84, was traveling northbound on his scooter at the 1700 block of Joe Battle approaching the intersection of New World.

At the same time, a 64-year-old driver was traveling east on New World, approaching the same intersection, according to EPPD.

EPPD said the driver made a right turn and hit Pedraza as he was crossing in an unmarked crosswalk.

Pedraza was taken to a local hospital at that time with several injuries, according to EPPD.

EPPD said that on Friday, Sept. 27, investigators from the Special Traffic Investigations (STI) unit were contacted by the Medical Examiner’s Office informing them Pedraza had died in a “long-term care facility” on Tuesday, Sept. 10 as a result of the crash.

STI continue investigating this case, according to EPPD.

The contributing factor to this collision is the failure to yield the right of way on behalf of the driver, according to EPPD.

EPPD said this is the 49th traffic fatality compared to 56 at the same time last year.
