EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A 49-year-old woman is dead after a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, Aug. 4 at I-10 West near Zaragoza, according to the El Paso Police Department (EPPD).
EPPD said officers responded to a crash involving four vehicles at 1:20 a.m. Aug. 4 at Interstate 10 West Mile Marker 33 Don Haskins, that’s near Zaragoza.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a white car and a silver car were both traveling west bound on I-10. A semi-truck and a trailer were stationary on the right emergency lane of I-10 West at MM 33.
The driver of the white car and the driver of the silver car attempted to go into the same lane causing a crash, according to EPPD.
EPPD said as a result of the crash, both vehicles lost control and began to spin around out of control.
The silver vehicle struck the rear of the trailer and the driver, Sandy Almanza, 49, suffered serious injuries and died at the scene, according to EPPD.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) said I-10 West before Zaragoza was closed for several hours.
EPPD said this is the 38th traffic fatality this year compared to 47 in 2023.
Main contributing factors in this collision are speed, alcohol and unsafe lane change, according to EPPD.
