EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, visited the City of El Paso Animal Services main shelter and introduced some new legislation during the visit on Friday, Aug. 22, her office said.
Escobar introduced the Supporting Our Shelters Act, which will amend the Animal Welfare Act and provide “critical grant funding” to local animal shelters across the country, Escobar’s office said.
The bill will ensure that shelters have the resources they need to care for animals, support adoption services, and improve conditions for pets awaiting their forever homes, Escobar’s office said.
“Local animal shelters are lifelines for communities, providing safety and care for vulnerable animals while helping families find beloved companions,” Escobar said. “But too often, these shelters are stretched thin, underfunded, and overwhelmed. The Supporting Our Shelters Act invests directly in them so they can continue their vital work with the resources they deserve.”
The Supporting Our Shelters Act is co-sponsored by U.S. Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Illinois, and is endorsed by the El Paso City’s Animal Services Department.
