KTSM News – ESPN: Texas fires Rodney Terry as head basketball coach

Posted on March 23, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The University of Texas has fired men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry, ESPN reported on Sunday, March 23.

Terry is a former UTEP men’s head basketball coach.

He led the Longhorns to the Elite Eight in 2023 when he took over in midseason from Chris Beard, who was suspended and ultimately fired after a felony domestic violence arrest. That charge was later dismissed.

Texas lost to Xavier 86-80 in the First Four on Wedneday.

Terry was the UTEP men’s coach from 2018-21. In three years at UTEP, he led the Miners to a 37-48 record (.435)

He left UTEP to be an assistant coach on Beard’s staff at Texas.

Besides the Elight Eight appearance in 2023, Terry led Texas to the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons.

Terry had also served as head coach at Fresno State from 2011-18.

This was Terry’s second stint at Texas. He was an assistant coach there for nine years under Rick Barnes from 2002-11. That included the Longhorns’ Final Four appearance in 2003.
