KTSM News – Estela Casas becomes Lotería del Chuco’s iconic character

Posted on September 18, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Estela Casas: a mother, journalist, author, cancer survivor, health advocate and most recently, an iconic character of the Lotería del Chuco.

Lotería del Chuco is a parody of the classic game “Lotería” but with a twist. It’s designed Chuco-style.

The game is filled with mascots and El Paso’s beloved athletes, singers, historical figures and landmarks.

“Lotería Del Chuco was created after three of us friends were playing the traditional Lotería game – but we wanted it to be specific to our hometown of El Paso. Over drinks on video chat, we started brainstorming different ideas using key landmarks, mascots and El Paso’s most beloved athletes, singers and historical figures. Some of the original Lotería cards were kept the same, but the image was changed to suit the Sun City. A couple of weeks later the concept came to fruition and now Lotería Del Chuco is ready for everyone to enjoy with their friends and familia,” read Lotería del Chuco’s website.

The game, announced via its Facebook page, that the “all-new Lotería” featured iconic local figures like Estela Casas as “La Dama” and Cassandro “El Exótico,” among others.

Four decades ago, Casas began her career in broadcast journalism at KTSM. She has worked at several television stations before coming back to the station where her legendary journey started.

Casas is well-known for not only her experience in broadcast journalism but also for her commitment to helping cancer fighters overcome hardship with access to screenings and other items not covered by insurance.

She is the founder of the Stand with Estela Casas Cancer Foundation which since its inception in 2020, it has raised thousands of dollars to help people fighting cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor herself, Casas is an inspiration for the community.

Now, she’s also the iconic “La Dama” card, becoming another beloved figure in El Paso.
