KTSM News – Evacuation order remains in effect for part of Ruidoso after flooding

Posted on June 30, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The evacuation order for the Upper Canyon area of Ruidoso remains in effect after Saturday’s flooding, the Village of Ruidoso said in a Facebook update on Sunday, June 30.

“It is important to understand that many hazards exist including debris in the roadway, heavy mud, and unstable trees,” the Village said in its update.

“The Upper Canyon bridge structures are intact, and crews will begin repairing the bridge guardrails today (Sunday),” the Village added.

More rain is expected Sunday afternoon, the Village said, and it is urging people to be safe and be aware of their surroundings.

Here is an update on the roads that remain closed Sunday morning due to the flash flooding that occurred Saturday:

• Gavilan Canyon from Sutton to Meander will remain closed

• Paradise Canyon from Country Club to Phillips Circle will remain closed

• Hull Road from Royal to Paradise Canyon will remain closed

The South Fork and Salt wildfires burned more than 25,000 acres. Residents were allowed to return home last week.

Flooding, however, on Saturday forced some to have to evacuate, especially people close to the Rio Ruidoso and in the Upper Canyon area.
