EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — House Bill 2853 officially became law this week, which will support the expansion and modernization of the Student Union at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), State Representative Vince Perez (D-El Paso) said in a press release on Friday, June 27.
The bill became law after Texas Governor Gregg Abbott did not veto it by the statutory deadline, which allowed the bill to go into effect, Perez said.
The bill authorizes the University of Texas System Board of Regents to utilize student union fees specifically for financing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and demolishing the existing student union, Perez said.
“Passage of HB 2853 ensures UTEP students will soon benefit from a modern facility designed to enhance campus life, foster student engagement, and significantly reduce long-term maintenance expenses,” Representative Perez said. “This new Student Union will serve as the heart of campus activity for decades to come, reinforcing UTEP’s position as a premier higher education institution serving a diverse and growing student population,” Perez said.
House Bill 2853 was sponsored by Sen. Cesar J. Blanco, D-El Paso, and authored by Rep. Vince Perez, D-El Paso.
“The legislation includes stringent oversight by the Governor-appointed UT Board of Regents, ensuring responsible fiscal management. Any significant future increase to student union fees must also be approved by a majority of students voting in a general election, providing accountability and transparency,” Perez said.
The bill takes effect on Sept. 1, with the phased fee structure beginning in the spring next year. The project will represent a “lasting legacy and tangible benefit to current and future generations of UTEP students,” Perez said.
