KTSM News – Fatal Lower Valley house fire ruled accidental

Posted on April 23, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Fire Department said the cause of a house fire in El Paso’s Lower Valley that killed two people last week was accidental.

2 dead after house fire in El Paso’s Lower Valley

The Fire Department says a woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s died as a result of a Condition 2 house fire at the 7600 block of Barton Street on Thursday, April 18.

Their identities are being withheld pending confirmation by the medical examiner.

The Fire Marshal’s Office Investigators concluded the fire was accidental and was caused by smoking in combination with an oxygen-generating machine inside the home.

The investigation also revealed there were no working smoke alarms in the home at the time of the fire, according to the Fire Department.

The Fire Department reminds the community that smoke alarms can provide early warning and valuable minutes to exit a structure in case of a fire. The Fire Department continues to provide smoke alarms, with installation included, for free.
